    Hey TTG, What are the disadvantages of installing tuners with the peg gear AWAY from body of the guitar?

  • @TheLookingOne
    @TheLookingOne 18 годин тому

    Hey TTG, good points. Should tuners be selected and positioned so the tuner knob axles are closer to the top of the headstock than the tuner peg axles? The string tension tries to pull the top of the pegs down toward the bridge and the force is then leveraged by the tuner hole. With the tuners oriented as stated above, the force at the bottom of the peg would then try to move the peg gear toward the tuner knob gear (instead of trying to move the gears apart when the tuner mechanisms are oriented the other way). OR does this not matter because tuner mechanisms are built to take it (especially sealed tuners)? Whaddayathink?

    Great idea for the 2x4 guitar. Draw a grid pattern on it to allow everyone that takes your guitar building class to sign it. Once it is filled up, front and back, you make another 2x4 guitar and start having it signed. Just make sure to put another layer of finish over the signatures so they will last for decades. The guitar would be like a cool instrument yearbook.

    I think there are a few things to consider when looking at using "home depot" or "found" wood for a guitar project. What type of wood are you dealing with. Keep in mind the same woods that are used for construction can be used for building guitars, e.g. Spruce is used for acoustic guitar tops and is undoubtedly a "tone wood" by any definition, and it's also used for construction. Similarly pine has been used by Fender to build Telecasters (some knotty ones even selling for ridiculously high prices). Another question is the quality of the specific piece of wood. Often construction wood comes from smaller trees (e.g. acoustic guitar tops might be from larger older growth) and is generally just random "run of the mill" wood. If you know what you're looking for you can select pieces where the grain looks better than others. As others have noted construction wood often isn't really that dry, it's dried but not really all the way, i.e. you should assume that you need to dry it for a fair bit longer before you use it. There's the question of form factor, 2x4 means making a multi-piece body which may or may not be desirable, mostly from an aesthetic perspective but it can also be extra work to joint all those pieces. Keep in mind manufacturers like Gibson and Fender sell 3-piece bodies. Another factor is the specific wood vs. the application. Necks need to be fairly strong as they're under string tension, if the grain does funny stuff they'll also be prone to warping if humidity changes, so a wood like pine is usually not a great neck choice (though specific types of pine like southern yellow pine can be used and laminating different woods can improve the strength and stability of a neck, i.e. use a multi-laminate neck). Similarly a fretboard needs to be hard so you can fret it properly and so it doesn't wear. All that said, using "found" or recycled or unusual woods can be a lot of fun. I think this Douglas Fir (which is actually not a fir but a pine) guitar might turn out great if the neck wood ends up good. Other builders use Douglas Fir, I've heard good things, I'd love to get some but it's hard around here where they grow all over the place (Western Canada) for some reason. Another thing is that soft woods can be annoying to work with because they dent so easily. Even after you put a finish on them they'll dent more easily.

    Where can an amateur guitar builder get Mahogany for a neck and body, a rosewood fretboard, a maple cap, in "guitar" quality, for $20-$30? I would think the price difference is much larger than what you're suggesting. By the way, Douglas Fir is a pretty nice wood and even professional instrument builders have used it. It's even used in acoustics. I would suggest that people can learn some skills with cheaper materials where messing things up isn't a huge deal before buying really expensive woods, I built my first body using 2x6's that cost me $0. I love that guitar and still play it. I wouldn't use a soft wood for a neck regardless (but that's not a tone wood thing).

  • @rattletraprock
    @rattletraprock 2 дні тому

    What I'm getting from this is... If you want to use cheap wood (2X4s) to practice woodworking skills (sawing, routing, sanding, shaping, etc.) that's probably a good idea. But if you're building a guitar, go for the good stuff.

    Do NOT used water based glue with veneer. Use Veneer resin or contact cement. Water based products will cause your veneer to warp. If your veneer is cracking that is due to improper moisture levels and pressing. Use a specific mixture of water, alcohol and glycerin or just buy the veneer wetting mixture. Don't just spray it on and go. You need to lightly saturate the wood and then press it. Changing out towels in the press the 2nd hour, 5th hour. After 24 hours, your press should be complete. No cracking and your veneer will be flexible.

Should be enough for a guitar. Same with "good stuff", body blank Khaya mahogany 70€, neck blank maple 39€. Together this is 109€ including shipping. So, the difference is whopping 97€!. Maybe things are totally different in America.
